Speed Download 4 introduces the ability to connect to, navigate, and download/upload from/to FTP servers. This feature has been in heavy demand and we are very excited to offer it to our users.

Speed Download offers FTP (with SSL) functionality that should satisfy the FTP needs of most users hence eliminating the need to purchase an additional 3rd party FTP application in many situations.

Please note that Speed Download 4 FTP was designed to let you accomplish many of the more popular common tasks quickly and easily and from one convenient place at any time. This alone is a major time saver and productivity booster due to the waste of time (and mistakes) usually associated with constant switching between different applications. Also note that we will be continuously enhancing this feature set.

To connect to a FTP server, it's very easy. You may select 'Connect to FTP server...' from the action menu in the lower right corner of the Speed Download application, or select 'Connect..' from the File menubar. Either method will bring up the Connection window.

• My Servers: this pop-up menu will list all the servers that you have saved in the 'My Server' section of Speed Download. This of this like a Favourites menu for all your servers.
• Type: from this pop-up menu, select FTP. This menu lists all the different connection types you can make with Speed Download.
• Server: enter the correct FTP server that you wish to connect to.
• User Name: enter the correct username for to connect to this FTP server.
• Password: enter the correct password for to connect to this FTP server.
• Remote path : this is optional. You can specify an exact location on the FTP server that you wish to directly connect to.

Once all the correct info is entered, you may save that info for quick future access, simply by pressing on the 'Add to My Servers' button.

Press Connect; if the info that you have entered is correct, you will connect to the FTP in question and you will see it listed in the left pane of the Speed Download window.

Note: The open lock icon means that you are not connected to a secure FTP server. When you are connected to a secure FTP server (FTP-SSL), a closed lock icon will appear. You can connect to as many FTP servers as you like; they will all be listed on the left as seen above in the screenshot.

Right-click (control-click) on any of the FTP servers that you are connected to in the left pane, and you will be presented with some options.

• Refresh: will refresh the file listings on the right.
• Disconnect: disconnects from the FTP server.
• Show Session Log: displays the session log for activity on the FTP server.

Right-click (control-click) on the top level folder in the right pane and you will be presented with some options as well:

• Refresh: will refresh the file listings.
• Disconnect: disconnects from the FTP server.
• Create Subfolder: creates a subfolder in that location.
• Show Info: displays relevant info pertaining to that particular file or folder.
• Show Session Log: displays the session log for activity on the FTP server.
• Remove: deletes the file or folder.
• View options: You can customize your columns by selecting by selection from a variety of categories made available to you.The columns are resizable and you may sort the list by any of the columns or reposition them anywhere you like.

Right-click (control-click) on any file or folder in the right pane and you will be presented with some options as well:

• Start Download: downloads the file.
• Show Info: displays relevant info pertaining to that particular file or folder.
• Rename: renames the file or folder.
• Remove: deletes the file or folder.
• Queue Download: adds the file to the download queue in 'My Downloads'.
• Copy URL To Clipboard: self explanatory.
• Direct Transfer: downloads the file.
• Add to Sensitive Servers: some servers out there may be older or on slower Internet connections and hence cannot handle the load of simultaneous connections to it. When you select this option, SD adds the domain for that file to the Sensitive Server location. What that does, is that it tells SD to only open 1 connection to that server (download rates may be slower in this case). The result is that the server to where you are connecting to is happy, and you can still get the file you want while enjoying all the benefits of SD. Note: you can remove a domain from the Sensitive server area by either right clicking on the file again (you will note that the CMM entry has changed to 'Remove from Sensitive Servers') or you can go into the Sensitive Servers section in the preferences, and remove the domain from there.
• View options: You can customize your columns by selecting by selection from a variety of categories made available to you. The columns are resizable and you may sort the list by any of the columns or reposition them anywhere you like.

Important Notes & Some Tips

- you can drag any file from a FTP server onto 'My Downloads' in the left pane to download it.

- you can drag any item (file or folder) from anywhere on your hard disk onto the FTP server in Speed Download in order to upload the files there. You can even drag these files or folders into a specific place on the FTP server and SD will upload them there. This is possible thanks to Speed Download's support of Spring Folder actions.

- if you are connected to several servers, you can multiple select them in the left pane and see their combined files in the right pane:

- you can select multiple items and download them at once.

- SD4 uses the FTP settings you set in Mac OS X system preferences (Network) except for FTP-SSL where it's always passive.
