HOT: Starting with version 2.1, ShareTool can be installed and configured as a service via a background daemon. This means that you don't have to be logged into a user account in order to share your network. The option to install the background daemon is located under the File menu.

ShareTool requires that the Remote Login option be enabled in the Sharing system preference pane. You'll be asked to enable this option if it is disabled.

Once Remote Login is activated, ShareTool will prompt you to enter a ShareTool email address & password combo when you press on the 'Start' button to share your network. This combination will be used to access your network remotely and securely.

If you don't have a ShareTool email & password combo you can easily create one for free directly from within ShareTool.

Note: The ShareTool email that you create and use doesn't necessarily need to be one that you own; it can be anything you like (i.e. fun@sharetool.com).

In the interest of better security practices, it's recommended you create a separate non-admin user account for Sharetool, and only allow SSH login for that account.

You can do this via the Mac OS X System Preferences - Sharing section.

• Select "Remote Login" from the service list.
• Switch the "Allow access to" option to "Only these users".
• Click on the "+" button to select an account.

For users not running ShareTool as a service via the background daemon: you don't have to actually login and start ShareTool from the selected account. You can start ShareTool from any user account and remote access will still be limited.
